Auction sales advice.
On Saturday, December 16, there was an auction held under the leadership of auctioneer Arnaud Oliveux , and I needed to meet him for a future project, so it was the perfect opportunity to go.
For those who don't know Arnaud Oliveux, he is the French reference in terms of auctioneer in urban art/street art, he works at Artcurial and to tell the truth I was somewhat impressed at the idea of presenting him with a partnership.
Know that after having seen the same week, a street art auction of another house whose name I will not mention, I can tell you that Mr Oliveux has not stolen his title of expert at Artcurial, as much by his knowledge as by his way of approaching his public and of raising the bids!!
For you, I went back into my personal archives to find an interview with Arnaud Oliveux in a special 2017 issue, dedicated to street art, of the magazine Connaissance des arts to review the 3 criteria for the success of a work presented at auction according to AO
1° The historical aspect of a work is a criterion for graffiti:
Look for works from the first generation, from the 1980s-90s, whether drawings or paintings. You will therefore have to go towards American artists from this period without forgetting the Europeans, but it would seem that these opportunities are rare because collectors rarely part with works from the first hour.
2° The Innovation aspect for artists of the 2000s generation:
This second generation of artists brought a new dynamism to their way of working, of reinventing writing, of using new media and of appropriating new techniques.
3° The artist’s career aspect:
This is indeed a criterion that comes up for any type of sale! And it is no coincidence that the most supported artists in sales are also those that we find the most supported in galleries. For this criterion, we will have to pay attention to both the artist's environment and that of the work itself.
According to the words of Arnaud Oliveux.
