I come back to a question that I often hear:
Is street art legitimate in galleries?
Street art is often associated with an urban, underground and ephemeral aesthetic, which can lose its meaning and impact when exhibited in a different setting.
Indeed, street art was born in the street, in opposition to institutional art. But there was a time when so-called institutional art did not yet have its place and was only considered as crafts.
However, street art is a form of contemporary art that has gained popularity and proven itself through the craze that has gradually become widespread. It first came through personal intentions of archiving, sharing, then belonging to a movement that the intentions became those of a group, entities and then those of official organizations such as galleries or museums!
Art galleries are spaces for promoting and disseminating art , and street art, with its own codes and diversity , has managed to benefit from this visibility to reach a wide audience.
Do not certain works have artistic, aesthetic and/or symbolic value that deserves to be exhibited, preserved and enhanced for all to see?
And for you: Is street art legitimate in galleries?
